September 17, 2008 By: JP Category: Children, Life in Santa Barbara No Comments →

Hi faithful readers! If you know an elementary school student, you’ve probably been hit up for some fundraising sales already this fall, so add this to your list! K2 are selling some items for their school, and they’d love to invite you to participate! Each child has a separate link, so you can click here for Kins and here for Keats. The little fella wants me to be sure to tell you the sale ends on Monday, September 22nd. Lots of goodies for sale … chocolates, wrapping paper, and various gift items. Happy shopping.

Book Review: Between Two Worlds by Elizabeth Marquardt

This book was really informative. It’s essentially a compilation of a survey of adult children of divorce and adult children of intact marriages. For this particular survey, the researchers limited their data of divorced families to those who continued to be in relationship with both parents after the divorce. There is a great deal of statistical data and interpretation, but it really is informative and helpful.I’ve been formulating my own “theory” that perhaps children from divorced families are not able to articulate their feelings about their parents divorce until they are much older (perhaps adults). I would say the same is true for children in intact families … as a child, we simply don’t have the emotional IQ (and language to go with it) to articulate our present-tense emotions.

I suppose more than anything, this book gave me a small glimpse into the stresses a child must endure when faced with a divorce. As the author describes her own experience, she felt like a football, tossed between parents, spending more time in the air, than in either place. Having not faced this experience as a child, I’m not familiar with this, but am seeing it up close from a different vantage point now. It’s interesting how hard parents work to provided safety and stability, yet how the ideal was never experienced or reached for those participating in the survey.

I did appreciate the author’s challenge that as a society, we’re doing everyone a disservice to consider even the possibility of the “good divorce.” (Between Two Worlds seems to be in direct competition with the findings from The Good Divorce, and refers to that data quite frequently). That term is simply not something the author or survey participants have experienced. There are some really interesting comparisons between those from “good divorces” and “bad, but low conflict” marriages.

For some additional web articles on the idea of “staying together for the sake of the kids” versus “the good divorce,” here are some links:

Any thoughts?

It is pure joy for me to see my kids do well. That joy is amplified when others experience what I get to experience nearly every day. That joy is poignant when my kids are recognized for exibiting Christ-like attitudes and behaviour. Help me celebrate Keaton as he was honored Friday October 18th with the Respect Award for his 4th grade class at Roosevelt Elementary in Santa Barbara.keaton-respect-award.jpg

The award reads, “This respectful person lives by the Golden Rule, is appreciative of differences, works towards peaceful resolutions, has good manners, is considerate and approachable.”

Congratulations Keaton! I’m proud of you son!

“Bless this food on our bodies”

It’s so precious to hear kids pray! For the most part they come to the Lord with innocence and genuineness that is so refreshing. They haven’t learned some of that “Christian-ese” like we “more mature believers” have mastered. Ugh!

But kids … they have heard our “more mature prayers” and often times attempt to model them … with their own innocent flare, of course! Recently I’ve noticed Kinsley adds the cutest “twist” to her prayer before a meal … often times you might hear someone (a “more mature believer”) say something like, “bless this food to our bodies,” or “bless this food to strengthen our bodies,” or “bless this food that we may glorify You with our bodies.” But Kinsley has been praying something that’s so precious (and probably way more appropriate!) The last few times I’ve heard her pray before a meal, I hear her say, “Bless this food on our bodies.” At first I thought maybe she just mixed up a preposition or something. But a couple of days later I heard the same thing. Nope … she was intending to pray that God bless this food on our bodies!

Now, being a nearly-middle-aged woman, I wanted to shout, “Amen … and pass the deep fried cheese curds … and may He bless those as they are sure to land right on the midsection of my body! Oh, and let’s not forget the soda and In-and-Out Double Double … bless that as it lands on my right and left thigh … and save room for the ice cream … may God bless it as it ends up on the back of what once could be called a tricep.” Eating has suddenly become way more spiritual as I consider the items on my plate and how God might bless them on my body!

I love that Kinsley prays this way … I love the idea. I love that when you look at things from a child’s eyes, you see them in totally new ways. I love that I would enjoy those great treats and incredible meals more if I truly believed and prayed this way. “Bless it on my body, Lord, cause you know that’s where it’s ending up anyway!” I follow this innocent prayer by asking that God always let Kinsley see herself as God sees her … a beautiful daughter of the King … regardless of where those chips might end up!
